BANK STREET PARK

The recent removal of the Greens Way flyover has changed how people can access the town centre, but also leaves empty and unused land in an important and visible location. This presents a huge opportunity to create a new public asset for the whole town: a new town centre park, with spectacular views out into the surrounding countryside. Mexborough’s urban environment is lacking green space and one of the primary aims of the masterplan is to bring new green spaces into the heart of the town centre, creating opportunities for play, small events, relaxation and contact with nature.

Your comments on proposals for Bank Street Park:

Why on earth is amphitheatre style seating, at great cost to build and maintain the grassy areas, needed when it over looks a car park not a theatre space? Get rid the parking and make it a theatre space. If the car park belongs to the pub and is not public space get rid of the amphitheatre style seating proposal How will you stop this new park space becoming a magnet / gathering ground for drunks, druggies and others that will stop people feeling confident in this space?

The new development is well suited, however please consider that we should aim to ensure these areas are developed in such a way that will dis encourage the congregation of people just hanging about at night time, or areas to graffiti. Areas like this should be encouraged to have businesses around which will also make use of this space.

As an interim measure the existing unused toilet block could be gutted and converted into a small trading unit (giving the fishmongers first refusal as they are established in the square and moving them - say into the indoor market - also means moving the fish odour with them). One end of this building could be reopened as a unisex/super loo and also a radar disabled loo. Disabled parking should also be considered. Do not overlook the need for a dog poo/litter bin in the new park. Wild flowers planted in slightly raised beds around the borders would be colourful, maintenance free and encourage butterflies etc. CCTV would be needed to help police this area. Planting trees in front of amphitheatre seating is a nonsense. If the car park is to be used for any entertainment purpose, then planting needs to take account of this. Some form of suitable height barrier with gaps for the steps, will be needed at the top of the amphitheatre seating. The possible building at the other side of Greens Way should be height limited so as not block the panoramic view from the new park.

It will improve the general image of this part of Mexborough, with seating, not too low to the ground!
