STATION SQUARE

Mexborough Railway Station is an important asset for the town, but it can be difficult to access, especially on foot, bike or bus. The masterplan envisages improvements to Station Road and the creation of a new square in front of the station that provides a better gateway for the town.

Proposed improvements to the front of the station include secure and covered cycle parking, better drop-off space, improved accessibility for those with impaired mobility and new planting and landscaping to create a more attractive environment.

Better signage, wider pavements on Station Road and a better crossing over Greens Way will help people easily and conveniently find their way to the town centre, or interchange with buses to onward destinations.

Your comments on proposals for Station Square:

It is crucial the Montagu buildings are restored as they dominate the view from the station up the street.

It would be a welcome change for the residents on Waterside Park, not having vehicles using the gate entrance as a turning point or pick up drop off waiting area that constantly block our entrance/exit of our park. One issue may arise however looking at the proposal of the corner leading to Waterside Park, that there may be not enough turning room for Articulated lorries delivering new homes to the park. Also where the under cover cycle shed is proposed may have a security issue of anyone climbing on the roof could also get over the wall onto the park. Question: would Waterside Park be able to have a much nicer entrance gate to compliment the new station Square rather than the one what the council insisted on the planning application that makes our park look like a council refuse yard from outside?

The placement of 8 (the new footbridge and lifts) should simply replace the location of the existing footbridge. The proposed location doesn’t appear to take into considerations and signals used for the railway and are likely to obscure view of the signals. Also, this will force passengers to take a longer route along the platforms (which will provide a poor experience in bad weather conditions) it will also force more people to rush (because it’s further away from the ticket office). The risk here being higher rate of accident and injury, and for non purchase of train tickets.

Station Road definitely needs sprucing up. Will a bus be able to turn around easily at the station or will there never be an integrated transport exchange here? Will the secured cycle parking include motorcycles and possibly electric scooters (probably banned from trains because of lithium batteries)? The new station footbridge with lifts is needed for anybody with mobility problems but for the same reason it is too far from the booking office and waiting rooms.

The proposed lifts will be a great help to older people, or others with luggage or prams, etc. provided there is the facility for help in case of a breakdown when staff are not on duty. Plenty of free parking and disabled bays are a must, widening of part of Station Road, might limit parking along it, which is well used.
