MAKING BUSES WORK IN MEXBOROUGH

Mexborough currently has a bus station on Greens Way, but it only serves eastbound buses, has poor waiting and interchange facilities, no cycle parking, and is oversized. Other bus stops are located around the town centre, but the bus routes are different eastbound and westbound, making it difficult for occasional users.

Buses don’t serve the railway station or have a stop nearby. While bus to rail interchange is not significant in Mexborough, the current location of the bus station does not help, and if it were more convenient, more people would potentially use the buses and bus station.

Our proposals would resolve these issues by providing bus stops in both directions at a new bus hub in the Station Road area with east and westbound buses stopping in the same location. Two options are being considered.

Preferred option

Preferred option

Creates a new junction with Greens Way at Station Road for a new bus only link between Greens Way and Bank Street. An eastbound bus stop could be retained on Greens Way close to the location of the existing bus station. This option is preferred as it would not require bus movements on Station Road to the west.

Alternative option

Alternative option

Would see buses travel along Station Road with a bus only section on Station Road. The existing bus stops on Hartley Street could be retained to provide additional stopping capacity for westbound buses.

Opportunities to provide additional bus stops on Bank Street could also be explored. However, this needs to be balanced with need to retain a level of parking and access for loading activities for the businesses on Bank Street.

The preferred option will isolate the Main St and Hartley St end of town and worsen access to bus services to people living in that area. Likely to lead to further decline of Main St. businesses. The alternative option seems much better. Given that bus services are declining, it's important to ensure that any proposals don't worsen the time keeping and commercial viability of services.

Mexborough is already connected to Barnsley, Wombwell, Rotherham, Wath and Doncaster by bus. To make these routes more effective, and to draw more people into taking public transport, a redesign to the interchange and the routes around the town centre/high street area would be a good idea. Something that is easy to navigate and has suitable waiting areas for all times of day and different weather should do the trick.

The preferred option leaves the option for a route down to the rail station and back. Bank Street parking will need careful consideration with the increase in bus travel in both directions.

The present bus interchange should be retained, with some buses using West Street for some stops. As buses move off Eastwards and attempt to join the proposed single lane, which might be difficult at busy times. An additional super bus stop should be created for buses travelling Eastwards by demolishing the Council owned shacks, fish stall, on Council land, alongside Wetherspoons Pub complex, which would enable a large wide layby for buses to pull into to pick up passengers who had been visiting that end of Town just off Station Road and Bank Street and then travel towards the Adwick Road roundabout. The service road behind the High Street shops, towards John Street is too narrow for buses. We must also remember the need for visitors to have free toilet facilities when they visit our area.
